1969 Chevrolet Camaro Resto-Mod "Instigator"
The first generation of Chevrolet's Camaro is one of the most modified cars of all time. From a few small engine modifications to full-blown builds where no stone is left unturned, the Camaro is a perfect template to build your dream car. This 1969 Camaro is a perfect example of the latter. Known as the "Instigator", this car has been converted into an absolutely stunning resto-mod by renowned local builder Chris Holstrom Concepts in Puyallup, WA, and was displayed at SEMA 2017 in Las Vegas.
To kick off the project, the body was acid dipped and completely stripped down to bare metal-any pieces needing repair were replaced with brand new AMD metal. Countless hours were spent on the bodywork, making sure it was laser straight and that every gap around the car was perfectly tight and even. The vehicle was then painted in a stunning shade of PPG black paint which truly shows off how flawless the bodywork is. The lower front facia on the car is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, flowing smoothly around two round fog lights and down to the lower air dam. The same clean look is carried through on the rear of the car with a Marquis Design tail light bezel and the seamless integration of two large, rectangular exhausts at the bottom. The exterior of the car does an impressive job of keeping all of the classic Camaro design that people love, while subtly improving every piece to make the overall package truly stunning.
Modifications continue under the hood where a tuned LS7 producing 506 rear wheel horsepower was dropped in and paired to a 4L70-E automatic gearbox. The engine has been thoroughly modified with a set of DSE headers, Precision Metalcraft intake manifold, and a Vintage Air frontrunner pulley system. A set of Ring Brothers valve covers give the modern engine a more vintage look while and set off the Anvil carbon fiber inner fenders fantastically. Unlike many muscle cars, this one can put the power down-a full set of DSE mini tubs to make room for the 335 section rear tires wrapped around a set of beautiful Forgeline GT3 wheels. The suspension has been comprehensively modified too so this car now handles even better than it looks! Upfront, a powder-coated Detroit Speed hydroformed subframe kit is paired with an anti-roll bar for improved chassis rigidity, and JRi hydraulic coil-overs on all four corners keep the car planted but still riding smoothly. Outback, a Detroit Speed anti-sway bar has been added and subframe connectors, also built by Detroit Speed keep the car from flexing. Stopping is handled by a massive set of 6-Piston Baer brakes on all four corners that not only slow the car down well, but the red calipers are a stunning contrast to the black paint. An Autostrad radiator with dual electric fans and a transmission cooler keep the car running comfortably, even in the hottest climates.
After all of this work, the interior could not be left alone- and thanks to Tony Miller of Stitches Custom Upholstery, the inside of the car alone could win any car show. After looking at the standard interior of a 1969 Camaro, Miller kept some of the best bits of the design while ultimately turning it into a proper show stopper. Utilizing the yard of the finest bright red Relicate leather, the seats, center console, door cards, dashboard, and headliner have been completely covered and create amazing visual contrast with the black exterior paint. Aluminum trim graces the door cards and center console and a classic horseshoe style shifter in the center console hearkens back to the original car. A Vintage Air system keeps the cabin cool on the hottest days and a hidden backup camera, push-button start, power mirrors and windows, and a high-end stereo mean this is just as comfortable to cruise in as a modern car. The steering wheel was created by Billet Specialties and leather-wrapped to match the interior and a set of Speed Hut gauges make for accurate readings while also looking period appropriate for the car. There are so many modifications on this car it is difficult to list them all but it is safe to say that every single piece of this car has been carefully reworked and its success on the show circuit proves it. Having won four Goodguys Builders Choice Top Ten Awards and been shown at some of the most prestigious modified car shows in the country, this Camaro is truly a one-of-a-kind car and would be a crown jewel in any collection.
