More often than not, vintage street rods are dressed in modern-built fiberglass bodies with flashy over-the-top styling and a new 350ci V8 under the hood. This 1933 Ford, however, is set far apart from the pack with a subtle hot rod look and a genuine Ford all-steel body. It is powered by a Y-Block V8 out of a '56 Thunderbird that has been bored out to 301ci and features a number of performance components. The car was shown at the GoodGuys Northwest Nationals in 2012 and was featured Rod & Custom magazine in July 2012
When this coupe was purchased in 2006, it was a custom project that had been abandoned by the previous owner and it was sporting an astounding 5" chop. To remedy the deep chop, and keep this coupe legitimately all-steel, a '33 ford sedan was purchased and the chop was raised from 5" to a much more subtle 2". Thanks to the steel borrowed from the sedan, this coupe remains built with genuine Ford steel, and is built on the original'33 Ford Frame. During the restoration, the body was professionally painted in metallic Dark Ink blue, smaller Guide 682-1 seal beam headlamps were added, and all the chrome and brightwork was replated or replaced. To fit the 2" chop, custom glass was fitted for the pop-out windscreen and roll-up rear window. Chrome Mercury wheels with chrome caps were chosen for their smooth look, and are wrapped in wide white wall tires.
Instead of shoehorning a 350 V8 under the hood, a Thunderbird Y-Block 292 V8 was rebuilt and bored out to 301ci before being fitted under the hood and paired with a C4 automatic transmission. The engine features a 4BBL Holley carburetor under the chrome air cleaner cover, Mallory ignition, a Walker Radiator Works radiator, and custom headers & exhaust were fabricated and ceramic coated. To handle the new engine and to improve drivability, this Ford rides on a Magnum Axle Company front suspension, ladder bar rear suspension, KYB dampers at all four corners, and a 1946 Ford rear end with 3.54 gearing was installed. The electricals have also been converted from 6v to 12v.
Behind the suicide-opening doors, this Coupe showcases a two-color blue & tan interior with Vintage Air A/C, Lecarra banjo-style steering wheel, a custom Secretaudio SST audio system, 1938 Ford instruments, an upholstered headliner and bench seat.
On file with this 1933 Ford are thorough restoration receipts and invoices, restoration photos and the Rod & Custom article.
