Automobiles can't get much more elegant than the Jaguar XJ. Even if the XJ's rivals approach technical perfection, they simply can't match Jaguar's panache. The hood retains its characteristic sculpted shape and is easily recognizable as an XJ. The headlights, now oval shaped and grouped together in the classic quad configuration, flank a fresh grille design that is inspired by the original 1968 XJ grille. It's the 'R' stamped on the tail of this fearsome feline that adds to the fervor. You get a lot of extra stuff with that single 'R' added, but mostly you get enormous and instant power from a 4.2-liter V-8 that is seriously kicked up by an Eaton supercharger capable of forcing 13.1 pounds of boost down the engine's 16 inlet throats and helping to provide 399 pound-feet of torque and a maximum horsepower count of 390, which leaps the XK-R from zero to 60 mph in 5 seconds. To keep all this brute force from misbehaving, Jaguar uses an air suspension that automatically levels the ride and offers excellent body-motion control. You get a six-speed automatic marshaled by Jaguar's familiar J-shaped shift gate, adaptive cruise control, Brembo brakes, heated front and rear seats and steering wheel, and a 320-watt Alpine stereo with a seven-CD changer.
The interior is elegant with gleaming touches of wood, firm leather seating, and a nifty touch-screen control system. The 16-way power front seats are comfortable and supportive, and also easy to adjust for the perfect position. The navigation system with touch screen is useful and intuitive. Overall, the interior is to be applauded for its understated elegance and premium execution. Advanced technologies include Dynamic Stability Control, Jaguar's Adaptive Restraint Technology System and Adaptive Cruise Control with forward alert. In addition to an occupant-sensing system for the front passenger seat, the XJ has standard side thorax and full-length side curtain-type airbags. Four-channel antilock brakes incorporate Emergency Brake Assist. Traction control is complemented by Dynamic Stability Control, which intervenes if sensors indicate that the sedan is at the limit of its grip. Reverse parking assist is also standard.
Jaguar is a sexy mix of sleek style, impeccable road manners, effortless speed and gracious accommodations. It has to do with what Sir William Lyons tried to capture in the marque he created: "Grace, pace and space." Included with this Jag are owner's manuals, service records, extra key and a clean CarFax report.
