About this Vehicle

This 1939 American Bantam Woody Wagon is a very rare piece of American automobile history. This fantastic example has been completely restored back to original. Beautifully finished in Gold Metallic with Brown Interior. Powered by a 4-Cylinder Engine with 3-Speed Manual Transmission. It runs and drives excellent. It weighs approximately 1,400 pounds and is just over 11 feet long. The American Bantam was manufactured by the American Bantam Company in Butler, PA. If you are looking for a truly unique car for your driving enjoyment or for your collection then this is the perfect car for you! Bantam produced only 322 of these wagons in 1939 and 1940. The Bantam Wagon Registry shows only about 25 of these in existence today. You will be hard-pressed to find a finer Bantam Station Wagon than this. This one will definitely get a lot of attention at the local car show or woodie get together.
These cars were designed by Bantam to be the gem of any garage. Described by the company as being the embodiment of nonchalant luxury, and by being priced as their halo car; the Bantam station wagon was anything but a little economy car. It was a useful, utilitarian, piece of art. The maple wood body was manufactured by the Mifflinburg Body Company. Bantam advertised these to get nearly 60 miles to the gallon.
American Austin Car Co. was founded in 1929 in Butler, PA. Their intention was to assemble and sell, in the United Sates, a version of the Austin 7 car, called American Austin. After some initial success, the Great Depression set in, and sales fell off to the point that production was suspended. In 1934, the company filed for bankruptcy. In 1935 Roy Evans, a former salesman for the bankrupt American Austin Car Company, reorganized the remains of American Austin Car Company under the name American Bantam Car Company. Production was started in 1937 and continued through 1941. A wide range of body styles were offered, ranging from light trucks to woody station wagons, yet only about 6,000 Bantams of all types were produced. The American Bantam Car Company is regarded by many as America's first economy car manufacturer but is best known for building the prototype of the WW2 Army Jeep.
