1973 Chevrolet Camaro RS Z/28

Produced in 1973, this Camaro is a perfect example of a second generation car. Painted in an absolutely drop dead shade of Daytona Yellow with black racing stripes, it is believed that this is one of just ten Camaros to be outfitted like this for 1973. As new bumper regulations were being phased in for the 1973 model year, the unique chrome bumperettes on either side of the front grille were being replaced with a larger single piece unit. But as this car was optioned with the RS package, GM was able to creatively figure out a way to keep the now famous split bumper on the car for one more year but only when specified with the RS trim level. The RS or Rally Sport Trim Package also includes a lower front spoiler that was paired with a color matched lip spoiler on the trunk along with a color matched grille surround and windshield wipers that were hidden under the front cowl. On the inside, the pair of black bucket seats look out over the long hood while the revised center console provides a comfortable armrest and additional storage. In front of the driver is an enhanced instrument panel with a tachometer, amp meter, temperature gauge and an analog clock which are encased by an upscale looking wood veneer.

If the split bumper RS package wasn't special enough, this car was also ordered with the Z28 performance package which takes the driving experience to a whole other level. Originally intended as a factory optional race package, the Z28 option box includes a whole lot more than just a badge. Although the first generation Z28s came with a rev-happy 302, it wasn't a tremendously torquey motor and wasn't able to be paired with an automatic gearbox. For the second generation, a brand new 350ci V8 known as the LT-1 debuted and was designed from the ground up using only premium parts and produced an astonishing 245 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. In this car, that engine has been paired to a 4-speed manual transmission that sends power to a 10 bolt Positraction rear end. The Z28 package also features power brakes, an enhanced cooling system, dual exit exhausts and sport suspension. The signature 5-spoke wheels in dark gray are also a signature Z28 feature that have been accented with special center caps and trim rings. There are few cars that embody the 1970s more than a second generation Camaro and this car is one of the last great examples built before the design was compromised to comply with federal regulations. Over the years, so many of these cars were crashed or rusted away, but this one has been saved and is a great opportunity to put the ultimate in 1970s muscle in your garage!

After the smash hit that was the first generation Camaro, Chevrolet knew they needed something special for their followup. Although the car was intended to be launched in 1969, they were held up by production delays and kept building the first generation car through November of that year. When production finally started of the second generation in spring of 1970, the car was a sensation- much longer, lower and wider than the first generation, this design leaned far more into the muscle styling language of the time. Unlike with the first generation, a convertible option was not available. GM Engineers at the time cited the second generation to be more of a "driver's car" than its predecessor as they had taken many of the lessons they learned while racing the first generation car into account when designing the chassis, suspension and braking. Although many of the engine and drivetrain components were carried over from the 1969 car, Chevrolet began offering many more motors and transmission options. As the years progressed, the second generation Camaro was afflicted with growing governmental regulations that choked power from its engines and mandated larger bumpers along with other exterior changes. Although disappointing, it means that the first few years of the second generation stand out as the purest form of the design and the best performing out of the whole 11 year run.
