1990 Porsche Carrera 4 Coupe
When Porsche first put the 964 generation 911 on sale in 1989, it caused a stir among Porsche purists as it was the first major overhaul of the 911 shape in the model's 25 year production run. With its integrated plastic bumpers, re-designed rear suspension and more supple cabin, the 964 spent many years as the orphaned 911 generation, with enthusiasts opting for the newer 993, or older G-Body cars. But in recent years, enthusiasts have come to realize that the 964 is potentially the best of the 911 range and represents the ideal middle-point between classic driving dynamics and modern comfort, technology and reliability. This European-specification 1990 911 Carrera 4 was originally a French market car that was imported to the United States in 2023
The elegant, classic 964 shape is finished in Forest Green and is in remarkable condition and shows just 79,983 km (49,671 miles) at the time of cataloging. As a European market example, this car is fitted with the Euro-spec headlights, and unlike nearly every US-spec 964, is not fitted with a sunroof, which has become a very desirable specification for collectors. Additionally, this car is fitted with a rear wiper, Porsche's first power actuated rear wing and black decklid badging. From the factory, this 911 would have likely been fitted with one of Porsche's more controversial stock wheels the "Design 90", but these have been swapped out for a desirable set of "Cup 1" 5-spokes that are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tires. Upon landing Stateside, this car was treated to a comprehensive paint correction and ceramic coating to give it a long lasting shine for years to come.
On the interior, cashmere leather is seen on the seats, center console, door cards and shift boot and appears to be in outstanding original condition throughout. Showing just a few seat creases over the car's 34 years of life is a testament to how well this car has been kept. One of the benefits of a Euro-market car over a US example, is the non-airbag steering wheel found in these European cars. In the United States, we got a notoriously ugly and massive wheel with a big center section, whereas this car is fitted with a much more conventional 4-spoke wheel like you would have found in earlier G-Body cars. A modern PCCM head unit has been installed which fits this classic with both navigation and Bluetooth, and the air conditioning was converted to R134 freon, both of which make this car exceptionally pleasant to use and even daily drivable if you so choose.
Sitting behind the passengers in this 964 is an air cooled 3.6 liter flat-6 known as the M64. Producing 247 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque, this engine sends power through a 5-speed G50 transaxle to all 4 wheels utilizing the first all wheel drive system put into a 911. Taking inspiration from the 959 supercar, the 964 Carrera 4 has a simplified version of the same system which uses computer controlled clutches to distribute power to all 4 wheels. In most driving situations, the power distribution is 31% front/69% rear with a center differential inside the gearbox which sends power to the front wheels, as well as the rear. In this period, this system was lauded for its ability to offer sure footed performance in all weather situations, and put many driver's fear of a 911 spinning at the limit, to rest. When this 964 landed in the US, the previous owner carried out a number of maintenance jobs to make the car as good as it could be. Starting with a new AWD slave cylinder, new fuel tank level module, replaced alternator fan duct, new battery and air conditioning recharge.
This 964 Carrera 4 is an exceptional example that has clearly been well kept and cherished throughout its life. With the addition of the PCCM head unit and upgraded air conditioning, there is no reason this car couldn't be used as a daily driver or classic road trip car, offering great comfort and dependability. Finding a quality 964 can be difficult and getting a Euro-spec car creates even more of a headache- skip all of that hard work with this example and have a car you will love to drive for years to come.
