2001 Ferrari 360 Spider

In the early years of Ferrari, their racing successes were based off a simple formula- a lightweight car with a powerful V12 positioned at the front of the car- and their road cars mimicked this design. But as time progressed, it became clear that a mid-mounted engine was the superior design for racing cars and Ferrari began to follow suit- but Enzo Ferrari made it abundantly clear that this would not trickle down to his road car business. That being said, as other manufacturers began finding success with mid-engine road cars, the pressure was on for the team in Maranello to put something together and in 1967, they unveiled the Dino. This started a new line of cars for Ferrari that has overtaken the V12 cars to become their most successful model range. After the Dino came the 308 which debuted in 1975 and is really the blueprint which this model has built off of. With its mid-mounted V8 engine, agile handling and still enough space to carry bags for a weekend getaway, the 308 was an immediate sales hit. After three more evolutions off the 308, in 1999 Ferrari was ready for something new and debuted, the 360 Modena. This was the first of the mid-engine Ferraris to veer away from the 308s classic wedge base shape and take on a smoother and more modern design style. Upon the car's unveiling, many cited the 360 as one of the most beautiful Ferraris ever produced and it helped usher the company into a new era of performance and reliability.

The 360 Spider was released just one year later at the Geneva Motor Show in 2000 and it quickly took over from the coupe as the most popular model available. This 2001 example is an absolutely perfect specimen and has been lovingly cared for by just 3 owners from new. Finished in a stunning shade of Giallo Modena, this car is not subtle but the color suits the lines better than almost any other shade available.On the exterior, the striking paint color is offset by an extremely rare and desirable set of optional 5-spoke "Modular" wheels that were optional at the time yet quite expensive and rarely specified on a 360. The red brake calipers give the car an extra racy feel and the coveted "Scuderia Shields" on the fenders were a very uncommon option at the time but look absolutely stunning. Although frequently a convertible will add a significant amount of weight over the coupe version of a car, Ferrari planned from the onset to create a Spider and because of this, the drop top weighs a mere 160lbs more than the coupe version of the 360. Inside, the car is upholstered in black leather with an extended leather package that has the door cards and dashboard covered to match. All of the leather is accented by special yellow stitching throughout and gives the inside of the car a fantastic visual contrast that you don't normally see in these cars. The seats are power adjustable and feature the coveted "Daytona" centers that mimic the interior of one of Ferrari's most famous cars, the 365GTB/4 Daytona. The stereo has also been upgraded and features new speakers and an aftermarket amplifier that provide much clearer sound than the factory units.

Under the rear engine cover is where this car truly shines. A 3.6-liter V8 with a flat plane crank pushes out 395 Horsepower and will rev out to nearly 8500rpm while emitting a fantastic noise that is enhanced by a Tubi exhaust. This engine is connected to a 6-Speed F1 paddle shift gearbox which was cutting edge technology at the time and allows the car to change gear faster than any human could possibly manage. What makes the 360 a particularly nice car to own is that, unlike many of the previous mid-engine models, an "engine out" service is no longer a requirement to change simple things like the timing belts. Although this car had its belts changed just a few years ago, it is nice to know going into ownership that a massive bill for pulling the engine and a multi-week wait are not in your future. It is truly hard to beat any mid-engine Ferrari for a combination of fun to drive and beauty but the 360 may take the crown for both of those things.
