1968 Innocenti Mini Minor
There is little doubt that the original Mini- built by BMC in England- was one of the most important vehicles of the 20th century by offering affordable, practical transport. In addition to the practical reasons for their popularity, they were also tremendous fun behind the wheel thanks to their lightweight, tossable suspension and front wheel drive layout. These cars became so popular that people everywhere wanted to be driving Minis- but in post-war Europe, it was easier said than done. For Italian enthusiasts, high taxes on imported cars meant that the average vehicle not produced in Italy saw the sticker price balloon by nearly 40%- making the purchase of anything other than a Fiat less than enticing. To get around this, in 1966, BMC licensed the Mini design to Minanese company Innocenti who made their name building motor scooters- who put the BMC Mini into production to the great joy of people all over Italy.
This 1968 Innocenti Mini is one of the earlier examples to come out of the Italian factory and it benefits from a massive list of upgrades that take it from an economy car to a proper driver's car. Finished in white with a black roof and two black stripes, this car has a racy look but is period correct and not over the top. Additionally, a set of killer looking 6x10" Minilite style wheels wrapped in sticky Yokohama tires have been added which are wide enough to still protrude slightly from the short black over fenders affixed to the car. In front, a Trans-Am style air-dam has been installed which looks great and balances out some of the other visual modifications. Out back, a racing style filler cap is fitted and bullet-style side mirrors are all fantastic additions and make this Innocenti Mini look like a real period road racer.
One of the beautiful things about the original Mini design is the simplicity of the interior. 3-Gauges sit in the center of the dashboard with a large speedometer taking the prime spot. The steering wheel is slightly offset from center and has a raked angle which provides easier ingress and egress, while also giving great leverage when throwing the car around. Although these cars are small on the outside, when you sit down into them, they are remarkably spacious and will easily fit drivers over 6 feet tall. This example does benefit from some modifications inside- starting with a pair of vintage-style Cobra bucket seats up front, metal shift knob and hand brake, as well as a wood rimmed 3-spoke steering wheel- all of which fit the vibe of the car fantastically.
Where this Mini really gets exciting is under the hood- fitted with the "big block" 1,275cc inline 4, the engine has been thoroughly upgraded to produce nearly 100 horsepower. To start, the previous owner went to Keith Calver at Calver Special Tuning in the UK who furnished him with a better flowing head, camshaft, new rockers and an electronic distributor. The dual SU HS4 carburetors were rebuilt and a lightened clutch and flywheel were added to help the motor rev up faster. For added reliability, a new clutch master cylinder with braided lines was installed and the charging system was converted from a generator to an alternator. The radiator is brand new and the cooling system is fitted with silicon hoses throughout. Up front, an Xpin differential helps put the power down and front disc brakes with 4-piston calipers and braided lines provide more than enough stopping power for a car of this size. An all new stainless exhaust with dual center exit tips ensures you will be heard when you are on the road, dicing it up with bigger cars.
When you see classic Minis in competition at race meetings like the Goodwood Revival- they are frequently put up against American Muscle Cars with 4-500 horsepower, but the Minis always stand a chance thanks to their handling. This car is no exception and benefits from a complete suspension overhaul with fully adjustable components. The suspension was just adjusted at Jet Motors and the car handles like it is on rails- and when paired with the hot engine- makes for a car that is nearly unbeatable on any backroad.
The Mini is a car that enthusiasts of all kinds can appreciate- from muscle car owners to high end European car collectors, the appeal is universal. This example is guaranteed to put a smile on any driver's face when they get it on a tight road and will have no problem keeping up with far more powerful cars.
