1928 Ford Phaeton Convertible Custom

Few cars are more emblematic of the custom car scene than a well modified 1920s or 1930s Ford Roadster. Starting as a stately, somewhat subdued car, by stripping off body panels, adding larger powerplants and adding custom interiors, these became the basis for hot rodding and a perfect way to have a lot of open-air fun behind the wheel.

This 1928 Ford Phaeton Custom Convertible has a very unique story, being built into its hot rod form initially during the 1950s in the epicenter for the movement - Southern California. It then spent decades hiding out in the rafters of a barn in Northern Oregon, before being sold to an enthusiast in Washington state who got it back on the road. That being said, it was still in serious need of restoration, so the next owners took the car to Nissen’s Hot Rod Garage in Williams, CA, who did a full custom build between 2018 and 2022. When the car was stripped to bare metal before being finished in bright orange, the restoration team found an 1895 quarter in the car - also known as a “Two-Bit” piece, which quickly became the car’s new name and the piece is forever enshrined in the car’s dashboard.

In addition to the bright orange paint, the car received a custom convertible top with glass rear windows, and an aggressive set of 16-inch spinner-milled wheels wrapped in radial tires. As everything in this roadster is on display, the exhaust, mirrors, spreader bars and more are all highly finished in chrome, giving the car a stunning look. The interior is wrapped in black vinyl with orange pinstriping wrapping around the seatback and on to the doors. The dashboard is finished in body color and features custom pin striping, engine turned metal and modern gauges, as well as the aforementioned “Two-Bit” piece.

Powering this Phaeton is a 292 cubic inch Ford V8, topped with a 4-71 supercharger. From the “Y-Block” family, this is a period-correct powertrain for the Phaeton, although it is believed in the 1950s the car ran with Oldsmobile power. The supercharger is topped with a Holly 850CFM carburetor, and power is sent back through a 5-speed Tremec gearbox to a Ford 9-Inch rear end with positraction. If you wanted to really have some fun in this car, a drag-racing line lock system was installed, making for some exciting burnouts.

This car was built for shows and touring, but has only seen 502 miles since its completion. Built to a high standard and with lots of great pieces, “Two-Bit” is ready for its next chapter with an owner that appreciates old school hot rodding and will enjoy every drive.
