1951 Ford F1 Pickup

Few vehicles better embody 1950s America than the Ford F1 pickup. With its exaggerated curvy design, striking chrome trim and punchy flathead V8, this truck marked the beginning of Ford’s exceptionally popular F-Series that runs to this day. This example is finished in a stunning shade of dark green, and benefits from a number of modifications that improve its usability and driving experience, without changing the experience too much.

Starting with an original steel body, this flareside truck was repainted, and the chrome on the front and rear was refinished for an optimal shine. Sitting on a set of 15-inch steel wheels with chrome hubcaps that give a stock look, the truck now sits significantly lower thanks to upgraded suspension underneath. To offer additional adjustability and improve the driving experience, the front cradle and rear diff from a Chevy S10 were installed, changing the front from a solid axle to independent front suspension with front power disc brakes. The bed floor has been finished with beautiful varnished wood, and the fuel tank has been relocated beneath it.

The interior has been completely transformed, changing from a simple vinyl wrapped bench seat and metal dash, into a much more comfortable brown cloth bench with mahogany piping and backing. A modern, adjustable steering column has been fitted with a smaller 3-spoke steering wheel at the end, and the dash has been refinished in tan, with a duo of modern Dolphin gauges set within. Additional sound deadening was also installed during the build, making the cabin a nicer place to spend time.

Under the hood sits a 239 ci Flathead V8 which would have been optional equipment in the era. Topped by a Ford 1bbl carburetor, this engine has received some upgrades in the form of 12V electronics, electronic ignition and a high torque starter. A set of stainless steel headers lead back to a dual exit exhaust that gives the truck that classic Flathead sound. This is then backed up by a Tremec 5-speed manual gearbox with a floor shifter, with a hydraulic clutch that makes driving this truck both easy and fun.

Representing the tail end of the first generation F-Series pickups, this F1 still has all the great, nostalgic looks of an original, but with a better driving experience and added reliability. This would be a great, usable summer runaround that can haul things if needed, and will get looks everywhere you go.
