1965 Austin Mini Cooper S

The Austin Mini Cooper was a revolutionary vehicle that played a significant role in getting the residents of Europe off motorscooters and bicycles, and into cars. Thanks to its brilliant design by designer Sir Alec Issigonis, the Mini was an efficient, simple to produce vehicle that maximized interior space, while keeping the overall dimensions down. It didn’t take long after the car’s 1959 introduction for people to realize that, in addition to being a wonderful city car, with a few modifications, they could punch far above their weight on the race track and in rally racing. This 1965 example was purchased and almost immediately modified for race use, and has a significant amount of competition history.

This 1965 Austin Mini Cooper S is one of remarkably few examples imported to the United States when new, arriving with its original owners in Fort Worth, Texas in February of 1965. By the late 1960s, the car was campaigning in SCCA events –primarily in Oaklahoma and the Midwest– but even competed in the 1967 and 1968 runnings of the American Road Race Champions at Daytona in Florida as well as a 1968 event at Riverside in California. The car was sold in 1976 and became a project for the second owners, who retained the car for a remarkable 48 years, selling it in January 2025. Under the second owner’s care, the car received a unique wide-body treatment, and bumper-delete before being painted dark metallic green, with yellow accents and the Mini-signature Union Jack on the roof. Now with a remarkably aggressive stance, the car sits on a set of yellow-center 13-inch basketweave wheels, with a set of disc brakes fitted in front.

On the inside, the original small, flat front seats have been swapped out for a more modern racing-style seats, wrapped in black microsuede, while the rear seats remain in vinyl. Drop into the driver’s seat and you are met with a 3-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel, which frames an original-style 130 mph speedometer, and an upgraded AutoMeter tachometer with a shift light integrated into the wooden dash panel. To your right are dials for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure and oil temperature, and drilled aluminum pedals sit in the footwell.

Powering this Mini is a 1,275cc overhead-valve inline-4, known as the BMC A-Series. This 1.2-liter engine was the largest displacement available in a Mini at the time, and is paired with a set of twin-SU carburetors, breathing through K&N-style individual air filters. This engine sends power to the front wheels via a 4-speed manual transaxle with a 3.44:1 final drive ratio, which was installed in 2024. One of the brilliant packaging decisions made by designer Issagonis was having the engine mounted transversely, while also having it share an oil sump with the transmission. This packaging decision allowed for maximum passenger and luggage space inside the car, and aided to the car’s nimble, tossable nature.

The original Mini Cooper is a classic car that is appreciated by the general public and car lovers alike. From its classic, unpretentious shape, to its thrilling dynamics, between 1959 and the end of production in 2000, nearly 5,400,000 Minis were produced. This example, with its stunning paint and wide body, along with numerous upgrades, is as fun to look at as it is to drive, and wherever you go in it, there is a great story to tell about its past life on the racetrack.
