1965 MG MGB Mk1

In the days before the introduction of the Mazda Miata, if you wanted a small, tossable sports car there was one country to turn to - England. With a handful of manufacturers building dozens of different models, companies like Austin Healey, Morgan and Triumph offered open top fun, at a reasonable price. That being said, of the sports car builders from England, none was more prolific than MG. Standing for Morris Garages, MG rose to prominence when US Service Members imported their cars after World War II, but really hit their stride with the introduction of the MG MGB in the early 1960s. This MGB is from the first series of cars built by the brand, about two years into “B” production.

As an early example, this MGB isn’t saddled with any of the unsightly rubber bumpers or emissions-controlled carburetors of the later models, and is instead, how the company intended to build the car from day one. Finished in a classic shade of red, this original US-delivery car sports attractive chrome bumpers both front and rear, and a vertical-slat polished grille with very correct looking “Royal Automobile Club” and “England” grille badges affixed. Under the same ownership since 1985, it is believed that when the consignor purchased this car, it was from the original owner- an incredible two owners over 60 years! For wheels, the car is fitted with a set of 14-inch wire wheels with two-ear knock-off hubs, which sit in front of a set of front disc brakes with rear drums. The black vinyl convertible top is covered by a tonneau cover, with a separate tonneau covering the passenger seat to keep the wind down when you’re driving alone.

On the inside, black vinyl covers the two bucket seats, which are accented by red piping. The inside of this car is an icon of simplicity with little more than just what you need to operate the car in front of you. Slide into the driver’s seat and you’re met with a large 3-spoke steering wheel with banjo-style spokes, which frames a pair of white-on-black Smiths gauges including a tachometer and speedometer. A fuel gauge sits to your left while a gauge for temperatures sits to the right of the gauge cluster. In the center console is an AM/FM head unit with a cassette deck, and heater controls are to the right of that.

Sitting under the hood is the famed BMC B-Series engine, a motor that was found in countless passenger cars of the era. Displacing 1.8-liters, this inline-4 was rated at 95 horsepower and 110 lb-ft of torque from the factory, but this car is believed to produce a bit more. Under the care of the current owner, this B-Series received a high-compression rebuild in the 1990s, which still looks largely standard under the hood, save for a chrome air cleaner on the carb. According to the car’s British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, the car was ordered from the factory with an anti-roll bar which helps handling significantly. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a pleasantly mechanical feeling 4-speed manual gearbox.

The MG MGB was the first sports car experience for many people, especially in the United States and remains a fantastic option for open-top enjoyment today. From its striking good looks, to its tremendously simple mechanicals, the MGB gives you the Miata experience, with a healthy dose of extra character and classic flare. Even 60 years after its production, this car represents great value and when it comes to smiles-per-dollar, it is almost impossible to beat.
