1965 Performance Cars Shelby Cobra Roadster
There is little doubt that the Shelby Cobra is the quintessential American sports car. Its English roots paired with a powerful American V8, the Cobra took the fight to the Europeans and won on the track time and time again. With original cars now trading for deep in the 7-figure range, it is of little surprise that numerous cottage industries have sprouted up producing recreations of this famed car. Performance Cars is one of those manufacturers - connected to Backdraft Racing until the mid-2000s, these were always very high quality builds with fantastic performance!
This Cobra Roadster was produced in 2004 and purchased new by the consignor. The car is finished in silver with black racing stripes, and has seen a remarkable 29,201 miles added in the following 22 years. When new, the car was specified with all the Cobra exterior hallmarks including an exposed LeMans-style fuel filler cap, front/rear quick jack bumperettes and side exhaust pipes. For some added safety, this example does benefit from both driver and passenger-side roll hoops.
The interior is finished in simple classic Cobra style with two black leather bucket seats separated by a deep transmission tunnel. Slide into the driver’s seat and you’re met by a wood-rimmed 3-spoke steering wheel that frames a tachometer, while the speedometer sits in the center of the dash and auxiliary gauges are fitted around the dashboard. The shifter for the 5-speed manual gearbox falls nicely to hand and a chrome fire extinguisher sits in front of it - just in case.
Under the hood sits a 351 Windsor V8 that was built by Engine Factory in New Jersey. The build includes a stroker crank that increases displacement to 408ci and is topped by a Holley Double Pumper carburetor. At 500 feet of elevation, the car produced a dyno verified 383 horsepower and 446 lb-ft of torque at the wheels - meaning that this Cobra is extremely quick. Power is then sent through a Tremec TKO 5-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels. For a better drive, 4-wheel disc brakes are installed behind the 17” polished wheels and coilover shocks are fitted around the car with front and rear sway bars.
This Performance Cars Cobra recreation represents a tremendous value - lots of performance and looks for a small fraction of the price of an original. The car has been exceedingly well cared for and unlike so many Cobras, has actually seen use over the years to ensure that any potential snags are worked out before you get behind the wheel.
