Buick has long stood as the luxury-leaning brand between Chevrolet and Cadillac - but it was hardly a performance-oriented arm of General Motors. That is until 1965 when Buick launched its GS line of high-performance cars, which were paired with the luxurious interiors that Buick buyers were familiar with. In 1968, the Grand Sport (or GS) 400 was launched in both convertible and hardtop variants. This 1968 GS400 Stage 1 has been under the care of just two owners, with its original owner keeping the car from new until 2009, when it was sold to the consignor.

Finished in Burnished Saddle Poly over a black leather interior with a black convertible top, this GS400 Convertible is in very good condition throughout. Built on GM’s Fremont, California assembly line, this GS400 is immediately identifiable by the unique down-turned chrome stripe on the sides of the car, and its quad headlights placed on either side of the wide rectangular grille up front. Additionally, fender vents are paired with GS 400 badging. GS-Specification 5-spoke wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires with the white lettering on the outside for a very period-look.

On the inside, black leather covers the two front bucket seats, along with the rear bench. In front of the driver sits a large wood-rimmed 3-spoke steering wheel, which frames a horizontal speedometer with integrated fuel and coolant temp to the left, and a clock to the right. In the center console sits a large U-shaped shifter for the 3-speed automatic gearbox, along with additional storage.

As a GS 400, this Buick is fitted with a 400ci V8, rated from the factory at 340 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. As this is a Stage 1 car, the dealer installed a high lift cam, heavy duty valve springs, upgraded carburetor and distributor and a low-restriction exhaust to eek out an additional 10 horsepower - although it is widely known that these figures were kept artificially low for insurance purposes. That power is then sent through a 3-speed Super Turbine 400 (TH400) automatic gearbox to a 10-bolt rear end with 3.42 gears and a Posi-Traction differential.

For a muscle car with a bit of extra class, it’s hard to do much better than a Buick GS400. Coming from two long-term owners, this car has been kept in excellent condition throughout and presents in very nice condition. There are few better ways to enjoy a top-down cruise with the family than from behind the wheel of this stunning Buick.
