1970 Chevrolet Corvette LT1

The third generation Corvette - also known as the C3 - is undeniably one of the most stunning looking cars to ever come out of a domestic auto manufacturer. Based on the Mako Shark II concept car, the C3 had a 14 long production run, spanning from 1968 until 1982 and in that time, the car saw many changes to keep in compliance with rapidly shifting emissions and safety regulations. Because of this, the cars from 1972 and before are the most sought after as they largely avoid the forced compromises and retain that stunning original shape people fell in love with. For 1970, Chevrolet announced a new variant of Corvette, aimed at the performance enthusiast who wanted a revvy, high performance small block. This was known as the LT1.

This 1970 Chevrolet Corvette LT1 is one of just 1,278 LT1s produced - marking less than 8% of Corvette production for the year. Finished in its original color combination of Donnybrooke Green with a White soft top and Green vinyl upholstery. From the exterior, the LT1 Corvette was identified by the unique power bulge on the hood with LT-1 badging and on this car, a great looking contrast pinstripe around the perimeter. The car sits on a set of Chevrolet’s famous Rallye wheels which are wrapped in Firestone Wide Oval tires with white letters showing for a very period-correct look. As a 1970, this car retains the classic chrome bumpers both front and rear, and the side gills are some of the most intricate ever applied to a Corvette.

The interior is a fantastic display of the cockpit-like design that was a hallmark of Corvettes in the 1960s and 1970s. The seats, center console and carpet are all finished in a deep olive green, while the dashboard and door cards are black. Drop down into the driver’s seat and you are met by a large 3-spoke steering wheel that frames two deeply hooded gauges - a 160 mph speedometer and 6,500 RPM tach, while a host of auxiliary gauges are fit in the center stack along with a AM/FM Cassette radio.

Under the hood sits the coveted numbers-matching LT1 350ci small block V8. Identifiable by the finned rocker covers, this engine was rated from the factory at 370 horsepower thanks to its solid lifters, 11:1 compression, forged steel crankshaft, high lift cam, free flowing exhaust and aluminum intake manifold with a 4bbl carburetor positioned atop it. This engine could not be selected if you wanted air conditioning, meaning it only went to the most serious performance enthusiasts. In this car, it is connected to a 4-speed manual gearbox which sends power to the rear wheels.

The C3 Corvette, regardless of powertrain, is a fun car to drive. They look great, have that classic V8 sound and handle remarkably well for their era, but the LT1 is one of the best to drive. Although you could option these at the time with larger, more powerful big-blocks, those engines put a lot of weight in the nose and made the cars less nimble - this is the best of both worlds, making serious power, while remaining light and tossable in the curves. With less than 1,300 of these produced, these LT1 cars remain quite sought after and provide a great opportunity to get into a sought-after performance Corvette for very reasonable money.
