1970 Plymouth Superbird Road Runner

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the battle for NASCAR wins was heating up among the American manufacturers. Everyone was on the hunt for tricks that could give them the competitive edge, and the MOPAR guys may have found the ultimate. In 1969, the Charger Daytona debuted with a pointy nose cone and massive rear wing that allowed the race cars to slice through the air, followed by its Plymouth counterpart - the Road Runner Superbird - the following year. Thanks to homologation requirements, these cars weren’t just built for the race track, Dodge and Plymouth had to build them for the road as well - meaning that enthusiasts could experience the pinnacle of NASCAR performance, on the road. This 1970 Superbird is a truly exceptional example, benefiting from a rotisserie restoration under the previous owner. It has been verified that this Superbird retains its original, numbers matching engine and gearbox and would be an excellent candidate for someone looking to show this iconic muscle car.

The Superbird is without a doubt one of the most flamboyant cars that Plymouth ever produced, and this car is in one of the more extroverted colors offered at the time - Lemon Twist Yellow. That being said, it looks absolutely fantastic, with the matte black accents on the nose cone, and black vinyl roof covering. The overall condition of this car is essentially show quality, and it benefits from extensive documentation dating back to 1977. This included an original window sticker, fender tags and owners manuals. Seeing this car in person and it is an exceptionally impactful vehicle, the comically large rear wing is accented by a Road Runner graphic from Looney Tunes and that front nose cone with popup headlamps makes for one of the most iconic silhouettes in muscle car history.

The interior is finished in black vinyl with a pair of buckets up front, and a bench seat in the rear. Sitting between the front bench seats is a console with a wood applique, which features both both additional storage and lighting for the footwells. An original-style radio is fitted in the dashboard, along with a suite of gauges including a large speedometer and tachometer, flanked by a quartet of gauges to the right.

Powering this Superbird is the legendary 440ci V8, topped with a “Six-Pack” or three, two barrel Holley carburetors. According to Plymouth at the time, this engine produces 390 horsepower and 490 lb-ft of torque which equated to a top speed nearing 150 mph - although that may be lower due to the factory ordered short rear end gear. This is paired to a 3-speed Torqueflite automatic gearbox which is notoriously stout and a great pairing for this high-torque motor. From the factory, this Superbird was also fitted with power brakes including front discs, as well as power steering. The entire running gear was properly sorted during the restoration and the car runs and drives fantastically.

In the world of Muscle Cars, there are few as immediately identifiable as the Superbird. From its unique nose cone to the massive rear wing, you can spot one of these historically significant cars from a block away. This is the ideal example for the enthusiast who wants a car that they can enjoy both at shows and behind the wheel, as it is set up very well for both. With just 1,920 produced, these cars do not come up for sale frequently, and finding one that is ready to go is even more uncommon.
