1972 Datsun 240Z -- Single NW Owner, Factory A/C and Period Upgrades
Although Datsun had been selling cars in the United States prior to the introduction of the 240Z, the two-door sports car was the model that really put them on the map. With its stunning long nose and sloped fastback shape, the 240Z looked both more exotic and far more expensive than it actually was, and became one of the first truly desirable Japanese cars stateside. This 1972 240Z is particularly special, as it is on offer from its original owner and sold with its original title and warranty & service booklets.
This particular 240Z is a well-preserved example of the iconic Japanese sports car that helped redefine performance and style in the U.S. market. Purchased new in Bellingham, Washington, this largely original Z-car comes with its original title, factory warranty booklets, and a compelling story of careful stewardship and thoughtful refurbishment.
Finished in white and featuring black stripes, it retains its classic long-nose silhouette and fastback profile, and in 2018 underwent a targeted restoration that addressed common rust-prone areas such as the fender wells and oil filler flap. New front fenders, floor pans, and bumpers were installed, and the body was taken down to bare metal prior to its factory color respray. In addition, all new vinyl upholstery was installed, freshening the interior while keeping it mostly original. Though documentation is limited, one photo from the repaint is on file.
The interior features red vinyl upholstery, a striking contrast to the white exterior. During the restoration, the seats were redone, new carpets were installed, and the dashboard and instruments were carefully refurbished. The car also retains its factory-installed air conditioning, a rare and desirable feature for summer cruising.
Under the hood is the legendary L24 2.4-liter inline-six, paired with dual Hitachi SU carburetors. The engine and transmission didn't require a rebuild during the restoration, although the head was replaced in the 1980s. The engine was recently serviced with fresh fluids, and the engine compartment remains clean and original, with factory decals still present on the air cleaner.
This Z rides on period-correct American Racing 4-spoke magnesium wheels, a dealer-installed upgrade inspired by the car's racing pedigree. A BRE-style front air dam adds to the vintage motorsport aesthetic, which was installed by the selling dealer when new.
Mechanically, the car runs and drives fantastically, offering the kind of engaging experience that made the 240Z a legend. There is no rust present today, and undercarriage photos are available. This wonderful car's condition reflects years of careful ownership and preservation.
