1988 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible
When the topic turns to off-beat cars, frequently the first brand that comes up is Saab. With its unique designs, center-console ignition slot and fighter jet-based advertising, Saab may not have been many people’s first choice. But, for those who did buy them, you would be hard pressed to find someone who didn’t love the brand. In the United States, Saab became a major player with their 900 line of premium sedan, coupe and convertible in the 1980s and early 1990s.
This 1988 Saab 900 Turbo Convertible is a particularly special example in that it has been under the care of just one owner from new and shows a hardly believable 23,096 miles! Finished in black over tan leather, this car which has seen less than 610 miles/year is in the exact condition you would expect. As a 900 Turbo, the car received a different front air dam, and large “turbo” badges on the front fenders and rear decklid. As a premium vehicle, this is fitted with a full power convertible top which is in excellent condition.
The tan leather inside the cabin looks nearly new as do the tan carpets. Open the door and slide into the driver’s seat and you are met by a 3-spoke steering wheel that frames a large 130-mph speedometer in the center and a colorful tachometer to the left and boost gauge to its right. In classic Saab fashion, the ignition is in the center console between the seats, and the center console is angled towards the driver in a very cockpit-like way.
Under the hood sits a longitudinally mounted 2.0-liter inline 4 with a 16-valve head and turbocharger. Power from the factory is quoted at 185 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque which is then run through a 3-speed automatic gearbox to the front wheels. Rack and pinion steering up front gives a positive steering feel, while four wheel disc brakes help the car stop confidently.
If you want a drop-top that you almost certainly won’t see at any car show this summer, this Saab 900 Turbo may be the car you’re looking for. Offered in near-showroom condition, this car is a true time capsule and one of the best ways to relive the late 1980s, behind the wheel of what is surely one of the last original owner 900s anywhere in the world.
