1989 Rolls-Royce Silver Spur
Rolls-Royce is perhaps the most famous name in the world of ultra-luxury vehicles. Since the early 1900s, they produced only the finest motorcars with levels of refinement far greater than pretty much anything else on sale at the same time. Built in Crewe, England, this company has long focused on evolving models over time, rather than developing entirely new platforms, and the Silver Spur is no exception. In production between 1980 and 2000, the Silver Spur was built on the SZ chassis which was shared with partner company Bentley, and underpinned the likes of the Bentley Turbo R and Brooklands of the late 1980s and 1990s. This 1989 Silver Spur is from the second series or the marque, and has been under the care of just three owners from new.
While most Rolls-Royces are finished in rather subdued shades, this example was painted in stunning Tudor Red over a bright Magnolia leather interior with red piping. Showing just 31,777 miles at the time of cataloging, this car is in exceptional condition throughout and is still quite an imposing presence on the road. The elegant squared-off styling is accented by the famed Rolls-Royce waterfall grill in front with the famed "Spirit of Ecstasy" hood ornament affixed to the front. The tall sidewall tires offer a smooth ride, and are finished with two-tone polished and color-matched hub caps.
Open the door and you are met by the Rolls' party piece - stunning light cream leather called Magnolia, with red contrast piping on the seats, and red leather covering the dash board. Nearly every piece of the interior that isn't wrapped in leather is covered in highly polished dark burl wood, including the gauge panel, center console, door cards and famous seat-back picnic tables. Nearly every piece of metal on the interior is milled, giving the "organ stop" vent controls, and the vents themselves, a fantastic, weighty feel when moving them. In the center console sits the must-have accessory for the wealthy Rolls driver in the late 1980s - a car phone which still powers up. In the footwells sit the famous deep-pile wool floor mats which are still in fantastic condition and are by far one of the most luxurious features of any car out there.
Sitting under the hood is the legendary Rolls-Royce/Bentley 6.75-liter V8 which utilizes a Bosch MK-Motronic fuel injection system on the Series II Spur. This engine is known for producing tremendous torque and its smooth characteristics allowing you to effortlessly accelerate, without feeling like the car is struggling in the slightest. Power is then sent through a stout GM-sourced Turbo Hydramatic 3-speed automatic, which sends power to the rear wheels. For the Mark II Silver Spur, Rolls-Royce introduced "Automatic Ride Control" with real time damper adjustment at all four wheels. This both makes the car even smoother, and also improves handling. ABS was also standard equipment on all of the cars of this generation, and the complex brake accumulators were preemptively replaced in 2019.
Driven less than 1,000 miles per year through its entire life, this Rolls-Royce looks nearly as good as the day it was first delivered. These days,you can't find a luxury car that isn't packed with technology, screens and computers, but if you want timeless elegance with an interior filled with the finest wood and leather available, this Rolls-Royce Silver Spur checks all the boxes.
