Debuting in 1967, Ford's 302 cubic-inch V8 had a long life powering the most desirable sporting cars in Ford's lineup. As time moved on, Ford would continuously upgrade the engine adding features like electronic ignition and fuel injection before finally at the end of 1995, removing the venerable "5.0" as an option in the Mustang. 1996 marked a turning point in Ford's engine history- replacing their tried and true 5.0 in the Mustang SVT Cobra with their new 4.6 Liter V8 "Modular" motor. Designed with higher performance and increased efficiency in mind, the 4.6 featured Dual Overhead Camshafts and was hand assembled by a two person team at Ford's Romeo, MI facility. Producing 305hp out of the box, the new engine had a 30 horsepower jump over the previous model and quickly became a favorite of enthusiasts and car magazines alike. In their 1996 test of the new SVT Cobra, Car and Driver magazine achieved 0-60 in 5.4 seconds-nearly one second faster than the previous generation car- and ran the quarter mile in 14 seconds flat.
The Mustang's 4.6-liter V8 was run through a satisfyingly mechanical feeling 5-Speed manual gearbox built by Borg-Warner and sent power to the rear wheels through a limited slip differential. Along with the different engine, the SVT Cobra featured numerous body modifications including a more sculpted hood, deeper front air dam and unique headlights. On the inside, the steering wheel and shift knob were covered in leather, the seat frames were altered and a unique 160mph speedometer was added. Braking for the Cobra was provided by enlarged 13" rotors on all four corners and rolled on a set of 17" alloy wheels. For 1997, the SVT Cobra stayed largely the same as the previous year with some minor changes in the front end to aid in cooling.
Delivered in August of 1997, this Mustang SVT Cobra Convertible was specified with a Black Clearcoat exterior and a Saddle Leather interior. It was purchased new in Colorado and has been with the same owner since it left the dealership. Using the car for only special occasions, in its 24 year history, this SVT Cobra has only logged 13,889 miles and has been immaculately cared for since new. The interior looks as nice as the day it rolled out of the showroom and the power convertible top is in outstanding condition. On the exterior of the car, the only modification made to the vehicle is a set of black, color matched 17" American Racing wheels with polished lips that match the lines of the car perfectly. The underside of the car is flawless and still features many of the factory markings and the engine is clean enough to eat off. This SVT Cobra Convertible is a perfect car for anyone looking for a showroom fresh modern classic they can enjoy and would be equally at home in the garage of a Mustang collector.
