The rebirth of an American automotive icon isn't always the cause for celebration, but the exceptional fifth-generation Chevrolet Corvette garnered Motor Trend's '98 Car of the Year award. The C5 Corvette set a new sports car benchmark for performance, technology, comfort, ergonomics, storage capacity, and value.
From a pure packaging standpoint, the C5 Corvette was a masterpiece. Vastly improved ingress/egress with comfortable seats, easy-to-read instruments, and well-placed controls established a sports car interior benchmark. Situated in a large pod behind the steering wheel is a handsome instrument cluster with large simple dials mounted to create a three-dimensional effect. The usual comforts and convenience features are included with power windows/locks/mirrors, cruise control, and leather upholstery. The Bose audio system is excellent, but the true music here is the rumble of the V8 underhood.
Power is courtesy of Chevrolet's 5.7-liter aluminum block V8 with a hearty 345 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, with abundant low-end grunt and smooth power delivery. This Corvette is also equipped with Active Handling, the Z51 Handling Package, a transparent roof panel, and fog lamps.
