2000 BMW Z8
Although BMW is a company that built its reputation on building sedans with sporty driving characteristics, it didn't have a lot of history producing pure sports cars going into the 2000s. The company's first sports car came out as the brand was rebuilding post-World War II, known as the 507, which was direct competition for the Mercedes-Benz 300SL from the same time period. Known for its stunning styling and aluminum V8, the 507 was exceptionally expensive in period, meaning just over 250 were produced. In the mid-1990s, BMW's design team began working on a styling exercise to revive the 507, but in a modern context - known as the Z07, this concept was refined for production and in 1998, BMW began offering its newest halo car, the Z8 for sale around the world. This Z8 was delivered new in Ontario, Canada in August of 2000 and was purchased as a "flip" by it's latest owner, showing 267 miles on it, later that fall in October, 2000 - making it essentially a one owner example.
Finished in Titanium Silver, this Z8 has covered just 23,913 miles (38,485 km) from new and is in exceptional condition. The instantly classic lines of the Z8 were penned by Danish designer Henrik Fisker and are strongly influenced by the 507, while injecting a significant amount of modernity as well. Fitted with a black power convertible soft top, this Z8 is also offered with its factory color-matched removable hard top. The 18-inch 5-spoke wheels are elegantly simple, and wrapped in a new set of Continental Extreme Contact tires. With HID headlights up front, one of the most unique features of the Z8 is the innovative neon taillights which are split for brake lights and turn signals.
The interior is arguably the most sought after combination with a Titanium Silver exterior, with two-tone red and black Nappa leather covering the seats, center console and lower dashboard, and complemented with striking red carpeting. This is paired with aluminum trim throughout, with upper dash and center console trim color-matched to the exterior. Slide into the driver's seat and you are met by a "banjo" steering wheel with a leather wrapped rim and unique aluminum spokes connecting it to the hub. The gauge cluster is offset to the center of the dashboard with a 260kmh speedometer and a 7,000 rpm redline. The Harman Kardon audio system is enhanced by uprated Bluetooth® phone and iPod connectivity.
The Z8 shares its running gear with the legendary E39 M5 super-sedan, meaning it is powered by a 5.0L (4941cc) DOHC 32V V8 (S62) V8 with 8-individual throttle bodies. Quoted power from BMW is 394 horsepower and 369lb-ft of torque which makes for a 0-60 of 4.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. This engine is connected to a 6-speed Getrag manual gearbox that offers excellent shift action and makes the car tremendous fun to drive. When these cars were first being tested by magazines, one critique was that they seemed to need a bit of added rigidity to aid handling. BMW listened to this advice and offered Z8 owners a "BMW Performance Package" which comprises an updated strut bar and strut tower bracing, with which this car is fitted, and is known to solve these issues and dramatically improves handling. This example was just fully serviced at BMW specialist Signature Independent in Kirkland, WA, including fluids, filters and plugs, meaning it is ready to be driven and enjoyed. It comes with its owner's manuals, full records, complete key set, leather tool roll, hard top cover, and Henrik Fisker-autographed radio cover.
With just 5,700 BMW Z8s produced worldwide, it is no surprise that the values of these cars have never really fallen since they were first offered for sale.
