2000 BMW Z8
Although BMW is a company that built its reputation on building sedans with sporty driving characteristics, its didn’t have a lot of history producing pure sports cars going into the 2000s. The company’s first sports car came out as the brand was rebuilding post-World War II, known as the 507, which was direct competition for the Mercedes-Benz 300SL from the same time period. Known for its stunning styling and aluminum V8, the 507 was exceptionally expensive in period, meaning just over 250 were produced. In the mid-1990s, BMW’s design team began working on a styling exercise to revive the 507, but in a modern context - known as the Z07, this concept was refined for production and in 1998, BMW began offering its newest halo car, the Z8 for sale around the world. This 2000 BMW Z8 was purchased by the consignor in Southern California towards the end of 2022 from the original owner and is a very complete example.
Finished in Titanium Silver, this Z8 has covered 55,836 miles from new and is the perfect example for the enthusiast who wants a Z8 they can drive and enjoy. The instantly classic lines of the Z8 were penned by Danish designer Henrick Fisker and are strongly influenced by the 507, while injecting a significant amount of modernity as well. Fitted with a black power convertible soft top, this Z8 is also offered with a factory color-matched removable hard top which is not frequently seen on these sports cars.The 18-inch 5-spoke wheels are elegantly simple, and wrapped in a new set of Continental Sport Contact 2 Tires. With HID headlights up front, one of the most unique features of the Z8 is the innovative neon taillights which are split for brake lights and turn signals.
The interior of this example is wrapped in black leather which is a timeless pairing with the silver exterior on this example. This is paired with aluminum trim throughout, and both the upper dash and center console trim is color-matched to the exterior. Slide into the driver’s seat and you are met by a “banjo” steering wheel with a leather wrapped rim and unique aluminum spokes connecting it to the hub. The gauge cluster is offset to the center of the dashboard with a 260 kmh speedometer and a 7,000 rpm redline. The Harman Kardon stereo system offers a 6-CD changer and navigation system.
The BMW Z8 shares its running gear with the legendary E39 M5 super-sedan, meaning it is powered by a 5.0-liter S62 V8 with 8-individual throttle bodies. Quoted power from BMW is 394 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque which makes for a 0-60 of 4.5 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. This engine is connected to a 6-speed Getrag manual transmission that offers excellent shift action and makes the car tremendous fun to drive. This car has been thoroughly serviced to ensure long-term reliability and some of the common faults like VANOS repairs, valve cover gaskets, and oil pump have all been addressed and more recently, a complete air conditioning overhaul was completed.
With just 5,700 BMW Z8s produced worldwide, it is no surprise that the values of these cars have never really fallen since they were first offered for sale. With its stunning good looks, revered powertrain and limited production, these cars will, without a doubt, continue to be appreciated and are sure to be collectible for decades to come.
