2003 Mercedes Benz S600 Brabus
For decades, the go-to name in Mercedes Benz performance has been AMG. But for some, those cars just aren't special - or fast- enough. For the very well heeled enthusiast who wants the ultimate in fast Mercedes, they turn to German tuning company Brabus, who for more than 40 years has been building some truly next-level luxury cars. This 2003 Mercedes Benz S600 Brabus exemplifies this ethos - what was already a very quick V12 luxury sedan saw the original owner shell out more than $110,000 on top of the original $120,000+ MSRP to make it one of the fastest sedans on the road.
Showing just 39,050 miles at the time of cataloging, this car has been under the care of just 3 owners from new and is in remarkable condition throughout. Finished in Black over Black, to those who don't know, this looks like a rather standard W220 S-Class. The only visual differences are a different front bumper with dual fog lights, quad-exit exhaust and Brabus badging on the rear decklid that give away what's hiding beneath. This example sits on a set of gray Brabus monoblock light-alloy 8-split-spoke 20-inch wheels that sit in front of a set of massive disc brakes with 12-piston front calipers and 4-piston rears.
The interior features all of the expected luxuries from a high-end Mercedes, with a pair of exceptionally comfortable front seats with both heating and ventilation. Both rear seats also electronic adjustability along with heating, and have their own climate controls on the back of the front center armrest. During the Brabus mechanical modifications, this car also received a $10,000 entertainment system which features an Alpine DVD changer as well as TV tuner and antenna, which play through a pair of Alpine 6.5-inch screens in the rear seats. A K40 integrated radar detector and laser diffuser were also added at this time.
When the S600 rolled out of the Mercedes factory, it was fitted with a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V12 that produced 493 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. This setup made it one of the fastest sedans on the market at the time, but Brabus took it to the next level. Displacement on the V12 increased from 5.5 to 6.3 liters and the turbos were modified along with the ECU. This bumps power to 630 horsepower and 733 lb-ft of torque, which is sent to the rear wheels through a 5-speed automatic gearbox. Estimated performance is now 0-100 kph in 4.3 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 190 mph, meaning acceleration is now about on par with a contemporary Ferrari 360 Modena.
Mercedes Benz has long stood as the pinnacle of quality and engineering in the automotive world. They make some spectacular cars, and when paired with the performance minded ideals of Brabus, they are taken to the next level. This S600 is one of very few with this suite of modifications in the country and will be an excellent conversation starter, as well as a thrilling road car.
