2004 Ford Mustang Mach 1
The fourth generation Mustang received a major styling update for the 1999 model year. Known as the “New Edge” these cars featured more angular, sharper styling, and had a host of interesting special edition models. One of the most well known is the Mach 1 built for just one year between 2003 and 2004. Paying homage to one of the most legendary muscle cars from the 1960s and 70s, the Mach 1 had numerous special features that made it truly one of a kind.
This 2004 Mustang Mach 1 is even more interesting as it one of the limited “40th Anniversary” cars, which fits it with special, one year only badging. Finished in Screaming Yellow, this Mach 1 has been under the care of just two owners from new and was sold to the most recent owner by Park Place Ltd in 2004 when it was nearly brand new. At the time of cataloging, the car shows just 16,771 miles and is in outstanding original condition, down to wearing its original Goodyear tires. Many of the Mach 1’s exterior differentiators harken back to that retro theme and include a functional Shaker hood scoop, flat black hood vinyl and unique flat black decklid spoiler. The Magnum 500 wheels are even a tribute to wheels from the muscle car era that were optional at the time on some Mustangs. The overall condition of this car cannot be overstated and it is about as close to showroom stock as you could hope to find.
Inside, the seats are finished in Charcoal leather and feature a unique stitching that is intended to imitate the “comfort-weave” seats from the original Mach 1. Additionally, retro-style gauges were added along with a fantastic looking aluminum shift knob- all of which played into that classic theme. On this car, the interior is essentially flawless with barely any wear on the major touch points- it is clear that the long term owner has really cared for this car quite comprehensively over the last 20 years.
Powering the Mach 1 is an interesting engine- what started as a 4.6-liter V8 from the 1999-2001 Cobra, the Mach 1 then received a set of revised cylinder heads from the 2003-2004 Cobra. These flowed better and meant that the V8 was capable of 305 horsepower and made an outstanding noise as you wind it out. When paired with that signature Shaker hood scoop which torques as you give the car throttle, every acceleration in this car is exciting. This is then paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels. For somewhat more buttoned-down handling, the Mach 1 received unique Tokico struts on the rear, as well as subframe connectors that were originally designed for the Mustang convertible to tighten everything up.
This car has been remarkably well kept over the years which separates it from many Mustangs of this era which have been thrashed on and beat up over the last 20 years. Included with the sale are the factory books and manuals, as well as service records dating back to 2006 and an original window sticker. With its great looks, extremely original presentation and fun driving dynamics, this Mach 1 is a great addition to any garage and would be a perfect first classic, or compliment to your classic Mach 1.
