The Targa is a very special and unique version of the 911 - and very different. The most striking feature and distinguishing feature of the Targa is a large glass roof blending harmoniously with the sports car's lines and lending it a distinctive personality. A side-mounted polished, anodized aluminum trim strip running the length of the roof frame emphasizes the elegant side outline. The glass roof is not just a visually appealing highlight, however, but also ensures a light, airy interior. The roof itself is made up of the sliding module at the front and a separately opening rear window. The sliding section opens up half a yard at the touch of a toggle button in the center console, gliding elegantly beneath the rear lid.
The cockpit of this Porsche maintains basic design themes from the past but boasts cleaner layouts and enhanced functionality, particularly the classic instrument cluster. Though the cabin has a function-oriented layout, upscale materials on the doors and dashboard, and remarkable craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout welcomes both driver and passenger. The black leather seats in front are firmly bolstered and deeply contoured, and are in excellent condition, and partnered with the the perfectly arranged and precisely weighted pedals, offer miles of comfortable driving.
As would be expected from Porsche, long known for its unique sports car engineering, the 2004 Targa came in with cutting-edge performance technology. Porsche fitted them with dynamic suspension technology capable of handling high-speed cornering. Engine and transmission employed the latest technology to deliver incredible acceleration while keeping fuel economy reasonable. This car impresses with its refined styling and athletic handling, with strong road grip and minimal body lean. The Carrera's acceleration is particularly impressive -- a result of its direct-injected 3.6L flat-six, rated at an impressive 315HP, and paired with Porsche's silky-smooth Tiptronic transmission. The steering is very responsive and precise, and the race-bred Porsche brakes provide the required stopping power.
Porsche has been bringing Targas to North America since 1967, starting with a version of the 911 that had a large, removable hard roof section between the doors and a structural hoop over the centre of the car. The sliding roof model appeared in the 1990s to appeal to buyers who wanted something between a sunroof and true convertible, with the rigid structure of the coupe.
