2008 Mercedes Benz CLK 63 AMG Black Series
You can rest assured that pretty much any Mercedes-Benz that has been touched by AMG will be fast, but for some people, that just isn’t quite enough. In 2006, Mercedes came up with the idea for its “Performance Studio” which was a group that would take a small number of these already capable Mercedes and turn them into something truly special. Known as the “Black Series” these cars only come along every few years, and the vehicles that come from it are regarded as the most sought-after cars from the modern era of Mercedes. The first Black Series car to come stateside was the CLK 63 AMG, a C-Class-based coupe turned into an absolute track weapon. This black on black example is one of 700 built worldwide, and just 349 that were sold into the United States.
This CLK 63 Black Series shows 43,388 miles from new and remains in very good condition throughout. Most AMG-modified Mercedes fly under the radar a bit- they are tremendously powerful and fast, but ultimately just look like a regular sedan or SUV. The same can’t be said for the CLK 63 Black Series. Taking cues from Mercedes’s DTM racing cars of the era, the CLK gained sizable fender flares front and rear, as well as extractor vents in the front fenders. To fill out those fender flares, unique Black Series-specific 19-inch 15-spoke ball polished wheels were fitted with 265 section tires up front and 285s at the rear. Carbon fiber accents were visible around the exterior, including on the lower edges of the front fenders, rear decklid spoiler, and the deep rear diffuser with four large oval exhaust pipes set within. Benefitting from a full body paint protection wrap, the exterior of this car has remained in excellent condition and shows like a car with significantly fewer miles on it.
Swing open the door of the CLK 63 AMG Black Series, and you are met with a pair of heavily bolstered bucket seats wrapped in black Nappa leather. These are necessary for keeping you in place when you are exploiting the finely tuned chassis, yet are supportive and comfortable on long trips, as you would expect from a car with the 3-pointed star on the nose. The rear seats have been removed as a way to save weight, but all of the other comfort and convenience features you would hope for in a Mercedes are present and accounted for. The carbon fiber and aluminum trimmed center console features a dual zone HVAC system, and the simple-to-operate Mercedes COMAND infotainment remains. The steering wheel is smaller dimensionally, features a flat bottom and aluminum shift paddles, and frames an AMG-specific gauge cluster.
Where the Black Series really shines is in its underpinnings. A hand-assembled naturally aspirated 6.2-liter M156 V8 sits under the hood and is rated at 500 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Although this isn’t a massive bump over the “standard” CLK 63, what separates the Black Series is the chassis tuning. A manually adjustable suspension was developed in connection with KW and allows you to dial in the car with pinpoint accuracy, turning this luxury coupe into a capable track day companion. The engineers who developed this car focused on things that would make this a truly great drivers car, spending lots of time dialing in things like the steering feel- never a Mercedes strong suit- this car talks to you through the front wheels in fast driving and gives you the upmost confidence that you are in total control. It is no wonder that Formula 1 used these as the safety car during the 2006 and 2007 Formula 1 seasons.
The CLK 63 AMG Black Series stands as one of the greatest driving cars to come from Mercedes in the 21st century. Although for a time the values dipped, people have begun to realize not just how fun these cars are but also that they are truly rare machines that should be cherished.
