This car is sensational and impresses with its refined styling and athletic handling, with strong road grip and minimal body lean. The Speedsters's acceleration is particularly impressive -- a result of its direct-injected 3.8L flat-six, rated at 408 horsepower and paired with Porsche's silky-smooth and lightning-quick 7-speed PDK transmission. The 911 Speedster comes with virtually every performance option available on the 911, including PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) and aggressive carbon-ceramic brakes. Moreover, there are a number of unique extras to the 911 Speedster: The seat center sections are upholstered with a checkered-flag pattern, with the rest executed in leather matching the exterior color. The power-steering system is very responsive and precise, and the large Carbon Ceramic brakes are very capable of rapidly diminishing high rates of speed.
All previous Speedster models are rare collector's items and offer perhaps the purest driving experience of all open-top 911s. Their unique design makes the driver feel more at one with the elements than any other 911. Reassuringly, the Carrera cabrio's rollover-protection system has been adapted to the Speedster's modified body.
Some cars are considered collectibles from the word go. Porsche has sold many such collectible sports cars in its 60-plus years of business. It's been a full 16 years since Porsche last built a Speedster. The first was launched in 1953; a two-seater with a shortened windshield, based on the legendary 356. In 1988, Porsche introduced the 911 Speedster, with its characteristic small, steeply raked windshield and double hump behind the driver and passenger. A few years later, for 1993 and '94, the concept was resurrected with the 964 generation. Debuting at the 2010 Paris auto show and available in a worldwide run of only 356 (a nod to the originals) units, the Porsche Speedster returned.
