2023 Morgan Super 3
The Morgan Motor Company has always existed in its own world. Building cars at a small factory in Malvern, England, it didn't really matter what other manufacturers were doing, Morgan kept building traditional sports cars, using traditional techniques, with engines borrowed from other companies. One of Morgan's first cars nearly 100 years ago was a 3-wheeled vehicle with a two-cylinder motorcycle engine up front that sent power to a single rear tire. In 2012, Morgan developed a new version of the 3-wheeler powered by a V-Twin based on an engine from Harley Davidson. It quickly became one of the biggest successes in the company's history and in 2022, they unveiled a new variant known as the Super 3. This was the company's take on what a modern interpretation of the vintage tri-cycle would look like and trades the motorcycle engine for a more traditional car unit.
This 2023 Morgan Super 3 has been under the care of one owner from new and shows just 35 miles on the odometer. Purchased from the West Coast's premier Morgan distributor, Morgan West in Santa Monica, CA, the car is finished in a beautiful shade of Mazda Soul Red Crystal, which is paired with chrome accents around the vehicle. In front, where the older 3-wheeled Morgans would have the engine, this car features a pair of headlights and vent for the radiator. The wheels are a unique almost disc-like design, and are wrapped in bespoke Avon tires, developed in tandem with Morgan while black painted cycle fenders wrap around the tires. A pair of cut down "Low Fly" roadster windscreens sit just in front of the passenger compartment, while a pair of chrome roll hoops at the rear provide some added safety to the vehicle.
With the Super 3, there is no door to swing open to get to the interior, just step over the side of the car and drop yourself in. The two-person seat is wrapped in tan leather with diamond quilting and wraps around to give some bolstering for the driver and passenger. Sitting in front of you is a 3-spoke steering wheel and the gauge cluster consists of a pair of hooded gauges situated in the center of the dashboard. Although amenities are minimal, a cockpit heater is fitted that blows heat into the footwells to help you stay comfortable when its cool outside.
Powering the Super 3 is a 3-cylinder Ford engine known as the "Dragon." With 1.5-liters of displacement, this engine produces 118 horsepower and 110 lb-ft of torque, which may not sound like a ton but when you consider the Super 3 weighs just 1,400 lbs dry, it makes for a thrilling drive. Power is sent through a Miata 5-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheel. The combination of the lightweight and unique handling dynamics make this a joy to drive and tremendous fun both in town and on curvy backroads.
To make this Super 3 even more appealing, it still has a factory warranty through August 15th 2026 and is being offered with a pair of Morgan-branded flight caps and a pair of Bertoni goggles so you can feel like a World War I fighter pilot behind the wheel. Although other companies are making three-wheeled vehicles, none of them have the character of a Morgan and few will get the sort of positive attention that comes behind the wheel of a Super 3.
