This 1965 Volvo P1800S Coupe is completely restored and expertly finished in Bright Red with Black Interior. It's powered by a 1.8L B18 4-cylinder engine that's backed by a proper 4-speed manual. The engine features dual sidedraft carburetors that help produce 108hp through 1778cc's. With its very Italian look, (styling was by Pelle Petterson under the tutelage of Pietro Frua when Frua's studio was a subsidiary of the prestigious Italian carrozzeria Ghia), a proper manual gearbox and race-inspired red exterior, this example is an attention grabber for sure and will transport you back in time. It has a beautifully shaped low roof and curvy lines. Up front is a Ferrari-style "eggcrate" grille, and the body lines flow out the back to modest tailfins at the rear that seem to hover above bullet-shaped pod taillights. The Volvo P1800 sports coupe seemed to come out of nowhere. It took everyone by surprise when it arrived in 1961 because Volvo was considered a sober Swedish automaker known to most Americans for plain-looking, rugged family cars.

Marketed as a stylish touring car rather than a sports car, the car was presented to the public for the first time at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1960. Volvo introduced the 1800 line in 1961 as a way to compete against European (and especially British) automakers in the sports car segment in the U.S. The idea was that it would offer luxury-caliber performance and styling at an affordable price. A series of cheeky advertorials ("It's sort of a souped-down Ferrari") bolstered the concept, but it was the car's mixed-European good looks that proved most compelling.

The P1800 received prominence in the early 60's when a white 1962 Volvo 1800S with number plate ST1 was driven by the character Simon Templar (Roger Moore) in the hit TV series The Saint (1962--69). When asked to name his favorite "movie car" many years later, Moore said it was the Volvo P1800S, commenting: "I have a great affection for the Volvo P1800, as, of course, I owned one, as well as used one in the series. It's a beautiful car." In 1998, a Volvo 1800S was certified as the highest mileage private vehicle driven by the original owner in non-commercial service --- having exceeded three million miles as of 2013.
