The Skyline GT-R name has been around since 1969, but where it really started to gain prominence was with the introduction of the R32 generation in 1989. This car established the GT-R's reputation as a technical tour de force and brought the GT-R name into every household thanks to Gran Turismo. The next generation, the R33, built on that reputation and offered more modern styling, and numerous updates to the mechanicals, fixing the R32's problem areas.
This 1995 Skyline GT-R V-Spec is from the first year of R33 production and was imported to the United States in 2022. Finished in black, the R33 GT-R can be identified by its rounded off corners, and overall more aerodynamic bodystyle when compared to the R32. With its subtle fender flares front and rear, paired with a large fixed decklid wing, the R33 doesn't shout about its performance but to those who know, it is one of the great Japanese designs of the era. This example is largely stock, aside from the OEM+ style 10-spoke NISMO wheels finished in Bronze which sit in front of stock Brembo brakes.
As an original Japanese market car, the driver sits on the right side - a unique novelty in the United States that, although daunting at first, is quite easy to get used to. The interior is wrapped in charcoal cloth with a pair of nicely padded bucket seats in front and two smaller seats in the rear. Sit down into the driver's seat and you are met by a 4-spoke airbag steering wheel and a host of gauges. In the 1990s, few people were doing gauge clusters better than Nissan. With clear white-on-black faces, bright red needles and wonderfully clear legibility, the speedometer, temperature gauge and tachometer in front of the driver, in the center console sits a trio of smaller gauges including one for turbo boost.
Under the hood is where the GT-R really gets good - a 2.6-liter twin-turbocharged inline-6 known as the RB26 which produces a claimed 276 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque. At the time this car was produced, there was a gentleman's agreement among Japanese manufacturers, capping claimed power at 276, but it is widely agreed the GT-R made significantly more than that. The timing belt was replaced in July of 2024. Power is then sent through a 5-speed manual gearbox to all four wheels via Nissan's advanced ATTESA E-TS Pro all-wheel drive system with an active limited-slip differential. This system is what makes these cars so special and has a way of finding grip places where no other car can. Although these came originally with HICAS all-wheel steering, it has been deleted in this car- which is a common modification for these.
If you remember the Skyline from video games of your youth, Fast and Furious movies or have always been a JDM car fan, you know that the GT-R sits above most other Japanese cars of the era. From a time when every mainstream Japanese brand was building some very special cars, the technology on display in the GT-R was the most advanced and even 30 years later, it still feels exciting and fun to drive. With increasing import costs and longer wait times, if you want a Japanese market car, it makes sense to buy one that's already here - and if what you want is an R33 GT-R, this is a fantastic example!
